Sometimes you get lucky..
Christian February 19th, 2008
Sometimes you don´t. This is one of the things Casey and I are learning about dorms. For those of you who do not know. Hostels many times have dorms. These are typically rooms with bunk beds, usually any where from 3 to 8 beds in a room. There are some with as many as 20 though. Casey and I have been fortunate that the most we had in one room was 8.
Sometimes your roommates are great. Sometimes they are not. We have been very lucky in our last stay at this hostel with roommates, until this 4 bed dorm room. The night before last, it was Casey waking up to a man in his 50s getting up in the middle of the night in nothing but a pair of green speedo underware on his way to the bathroom. I don´t think that is common courtesy. I mean at least throw on a pair of shorts. Dorm room courtesy, some have it some don´t. Last night, sleep was not an option. Here is a replay of last night.
SLAM!!!! the door shuts at 2:30 (I guess the missing roommate has returned from the dance barn on the hill)
Rustle - rustle - zip - zip (What the hell could she possibly need at this time)
5 minutes pass - Swoosh - The sliding bathroom door closes, followed by a tinkling sound (Got to love the privacy you get with the thin doors in a dorm)
Couple more minutes pass. . . . . rustle rustle rustle … ohh now it is time to access the locker…. SLAM!!!! (she exits the room, not sure why)
30 minutes later …. SLAM!!! (She enters the room and gets in her bed … thank god, sleep at last)
1 hour later around 3:30 or 4 in the morning, rustle rustle rustle —-running water, whoosh whoosh (I mean who doesn´t wake up in the middle of the night to brush their teeth?)
Sleep time? only for another hour.. The rest of the morning was spent covering my head with my pillow trying to avoid the lovely sounds of scrunchy plastic bags and zippers, not to mention the occasional nalgine bottle slamming on the floor.
Needless to say, Casey and I are very happy to have a private room tonight. It only takes one roommate out of the 4 beds to ruin a nights sleep.
We are headed down to Ushuaia (Southern most city in the world) later today on a plane. We have two posts we are working on from our time in El Calafate and El Chalten, however the internet in this town is too slow to upload the photos. Apparently it is quicker down there so we will post down south. Our hostel down in Ushuaia seems very nice, I just hope that they have our reservation. It always makes me nervous that down here a lot of the time you just email places and they will respond if they have room or not. There is no deposit and no form to fill out, just a response saying that they have you written down.
We have been getting very good at cooking while down here. It is so much cheaper to cook in. We made steak with peppers and onions, with rice the other night (amazing). This meal cost $4. We made pizza yesterday for lunch that was not even Ellio´s (Thats right fresh pizza). That one broke the bank at $2.50.
Thanks everyone for the comments on the site, it lets Casey and I know that there are actually people following along with us on our journey.
