All Rested and Ready for Some Adventures

Christian August 23rd, 2008

Well it has been a while since we have posted anything.  Our time at home was very nice.  We spent some time working, and a bit of other time enjoying some “normal things”.  Two weeks before leaving for the trip, I crashed my mountain bike on a downhill course and had the world’s largest hematoma in my thigh.  As I flew over the handlebars still attached to my bike’s pedals, I landed thigh first onto a pointy rock.  It wasn’t as painful as I thought it was going to be.  However, once we got home, it swelled to the size of a melon (no exageration).  I went to the ER where they gave me an ace bandage instead of draining it.  By the next morning the swelling went down, but all that meant was that the blood had moved from that area to elsewhere in my leg.  It started causing my extreme pain in my knee and on my tendons.  We really thought it was going to delay the trip.  However, with tons of soaking and some rub it is at 80% now and is doing well.

 Two Weeks After the Fall
One thing that we realized while home is that it is very easy to get stuck back into the routine of everyday life.  At first you return excited to see everyone and see what has changed in the period of time that you have been away.  After the first couple of days or the first week, this excitement wears thin and you begin to realize something.  You have changed greatly on the trip.  Traveling has made you a better, stronger person.  You now have a different view on many things.  All the while realizing that the people that kept to their 9-5 routine have not changed at all.  There may be a few new shops around, or so and so got a new job, but nothing “really” changed.  It is comforting in a way to know that things stay the same, but at the same time almost dissappointing.  It really makes you not want “normal” and “routine”.
We are glad to be out of the routine once again.  We are in London now, and enjoying it.  It may be brutally expensive, but we are making the most of it and are happy to be out of a routine.  We hopefully will have a blog and pics up within a week or so for our time in London.

That’s quite the bruise! I’m a mountain biker myself and know full well the injuries that can be incurred - you’re lucky to have gotten away so easily!! I stopped riding ‘clipped in’ after I wrecked my knee from not being able to unclip in time!!

Enjoy the second part of your trip. Will you be spending much time in Europe? And then where to? Your itinerary page stops right about now.

    Cheers,
    Gillian

We are in Europe now and will be here until the 26th of September. We are flying to Sydney from Frankfurt. We will be living in Sydney for a month, while I work a little and we take some weekend trips. After my work ends in mid October, we will travel a bit more in Australia before heading to New Zealand. From New Zealand our plans are kind of blurry right now. We are definitly going to Thailand (hoping the political issues clear up) and Cambodia. We are unsure what else we are going to do. It all depends on money and the cost of plane tickets. We expect to finally come home by mid December.
