The Adventure a Package Started

Christian March 10th, 2008

The Begining

We were in Buenos Aires when we finally decided that we want our first package on the road.  This package would consist of a couple of camera cards, a full size laptop  (to edit photos), a dress for Casey, a pair of her jeans and a few other odds and ends.  US Postal Service gave us the cheapest rate, however we decided to go with DHL for 6 times the price because they promised to get it to Mendoza the quickest and seemed to be the most reliable while also having a strong presence down here.  On the website it says that they have customs brokers in over 140 counties and can expedite the customs processing to a matter of minutes or hours.  I called the internacional shipping call center to make sure everything would be fine.  The rep assured me that what I was shipping would not be a problem at all since they are used items.  The package was sent late on Wednesday the 27th of February from outside of Philadelphia.  By the next day, it was already in Miami.  On Friday the 29th it was in Buenos Aires.  What Speed!  Then on Monday the 3rd the package showed customs delay.  We figured this was due to the weekend that just had ended.  Then we checked again on Tuesday for the status of the package online.  Then we got the news.

Something is wrong

Mendoza - The Heart of Wine Country

Christian March 9th, 2008

We arrived in Mendoza on a picture perfect day.  We spent our first day exploring the city and going to the tourist office.  We recieved almost too much information.  We had to sift through all of the information to figure out what we really wanted to do.  We decided on going a few things to do and just booked them at our hostel.  The first excursion that we chose was called “High Mountain”.  The second tour was a winery tour.  Since we got there so early, we still had most of this beautiful day to explore the parks in Mendoza.

Ushuaia is the southern most city in the world. It is located on the Beagle Channel, and has jagged mountains as its backdrop. It is one of the main jump off points for Antartica. There are many cruise ships that dock in the harbor, often filling the streets with tourists.

Our trip here started with a very bumpy plane landing. Continue Reading »

Trekking to the base of Fitz Roy

Christian February 24th, 2008

We woke up early to have the shuttle forget us. Again, we did not sleep in for no reason. They had a taxi come a get us to take us to the bus station. We arrived in El Chatlen around 12:30 pm on February 14 (Valentines Day). The town is very small, just founded in 1985. The population is about 800 in the winter and 1500 in the summer. It has beautiful views of the mountains, including the famous Fitz Roy. Continue Reading »

Sometimes you get lucky..

Christian February 19th, 2008

Sometimes you don´t.  This is one of the things Casey and I are learning about dorms.  For those of you who do not know.  Hostels many times have dorms.  These are typically rooms with bunk beds, usually any where from 3 to 8 beds in a room.  There are some with as many as 20 though.  Casey and I have been fortunate that the most we had in one room was 8.

Sometimes your roommates are great.  Sometimes they are not.  Continue Reading »

Hotel Carly - A demon from Hell itself

Christian February 10th, 2008

We arrived in Buenos Aires 9th of February and decided to go cheap to make up for blowing our budget in Uruguay.  We went to a place named Hotel Carly that was recommended in our Lonely Planet South America Book as a cheap but good place to stay.  We get there and there were already some tell tale signs that this place wasn´t going to work out.  Continue Reading »
